It used to be common knowledge that Ambient mages are very, very rare. So rare, in fact, that most non-mages had never even heard of them. But more and more students who come to Winding Circle have been showing talents the likes of which have never been seen before. More and more ambient mages are arriving, and it's becoming scary.
Meanwhile, a group of people-all mages, coincidentally-have been gathering outside of Emelan. This group does a lot to stay out of suspicion. They have done nothing yet, but other mages are getting edgy as more of them join. What is the purpose for these meetings? Could Emelan be in danger? Or Winding Circle? Young ambient mages will soon be forced to choose: fight or flee. They may become the main focus of the outside group. Together they create a huge power that is enough to overthrow the group. Or the royal family, if they wished. Ambient mages are beginning to form small groups, for differing reasons.
As if that wasn't enough, the royal family themselves is in turmoil. Duke Vedris was found lying dead in his bead one night. Eyes naturally turned to the sinister group that was beginning to look even more sinister as time went on. The new ruler of Emelan, Duke Sylveth, is not nearly as fair as the previous. He treats Ambient mages as if they are his servants. Will his attitude toward them backfire?

"But which side are we on?
Whichever side we want to be on!"
