Here's what I've been coming up with for our new and improved plots. They might be edited, but for now, here's the "straightforward" version:
Saor and Sceith are locked in a stalemate war of eighty years. The Outer Hebredes are allied with Saor and are after Ireland. Ireland is run by a child-king whose advisers stole the throne from the real king, who is now exiled. The kingdom is not yet experiencing famine, but there is a concerning shortage of food. On top of all this, Ireland is being blackmailed by Sceith to fight against Saor and the Hebredes. Skye, which used to encompass all of Scotland, has been reduced to a tiny isle trying to maintain its neutrality. This is made difficult by Saor, as it insists that Skye is a protectorate of Saor. Skye disagrees.
The Celtic Seas are swarming with hoards of bored pirates. They're not fussed about who they fight and their king is a bloody coward with no control over anything.
Great Britain is the largest of the twelve kingdoms and so far, has been keeping to itself. Unknown to everyone except the king of Sceith and a few trusted advisers, Sceith and Britain have just formed an alliance to crush the other kingdoms. Both King Uther Pendragon and King Connor Alexander plan to turn against each other once everything else is conquered.
In the far North of Scotland, the Shetland Islands are "home" to poverty-stricken peasants. Some of the native-born youth have formed into two groups -- the Flames and the Irons and they are fighting against each other. There is no escaping the islands.
The protectorate of Cornwall is ruled by a British war captain who is trying to raise an army of Cornish to overthrow his English masters. The problems with this plan are that the people don't like him, they are rebelling against him and he's crazy to boot.
In Gaping Gyll in the mountain of Ingleborough, full-blooded banshees from all the other kingdoms are gathering to evoke their ancient magic and train for battle. It is said that they are banishing the part-blood banshees from their ranks. ((In this RPG, banshees are male and female)).
The mer-people are hiding in their aquatic palaces in the English Channel. They think the land-dwellers are coo-coo, yet they are planning to enter the war for no apparently reason. Maybe they're bored. They like harassing the pirates.
Unlike Skye, Avalon is in complete control of its affairs. However, the mysterious Lady of the Lake (the long-time resident Queen-Bitch) is being challenged by the other Queen-Bitch British (and raised in France) Morgana Le Fey. The residents are to be pitied.
The poor Welsh, they're fiercely fighting against the English for their independence and they are failing miserably, for the second time, no less.
