``PALADIN ENGELIER ALEXANDER
Name a shrub after me— something prickly and hard to eradicate.
They christened me MOIRA and I’ve fought through FIFTEEN summers. They say I’m NUTTY, LOYAL, CLEVER and I’m not planning to change any time soon. I read carefully and I have found that the magic words are KILTS! MEN IN KILTS!. Many masks hang upon my castle wall, but I hide behind MARIAN FITZWALTER, JENNIFER MACKENZIE, FIREKEEPER and I’ve been playing this game of Risk for FOUR YEARS and people say I’m d*** good at it.

FAMILY>> Oh, gods, where to start? His mother his dead, his father's old as dirt and mentally insane, his wife's cool and distant (and he reciprocates the demeanor), his children are willfull, spoiled, and pretty much disasters, not to mention that he has an unknown uncle that happens to have styled himself as King of Sceith and is thus Paladin's chief enemy. His nieces and nephew aren't much better than his own children, and his brother is, well, he's him. Meh, bottom line is, Paladin and his family definantly aren't as close as they could be, and there's some family-strife going on...Oh, and it should be mentioned that the only being Paladin has really come to love is his nephew Peter, and even then, that's on a good day.

>> Paladin Alexander is, and probably forevermore shall be, defined as cold, cool, and dispassionate, at least, out of the bedroom. He's incredibly intellegent, and has been king since a very young age; he's come to learn to hide his emotions and to detach himself from situations. It doesn't help that he had a fairly troubled childhood and his present life brings him virtually no joy: a frigid bitch of a wife, a pathetic gaggle of get, a cdumbersome younger brother, and a shamefully insane ex-king of a father, what's not to dislike? As such, his personal life is not something he cares to dwell upon, and as such, the man frequently delves into the world of politics and the kingdom affairs, preferring paper to people. Of course, he doesn't dislike all people. He feels fairly decent towards Lord Hawk, and he's keenly aware and interested in women of all sorts, an endeavor that carries on from his earlier days.
TRADITIONAL STRICT COMMANDING INTELLEGENT COLD
To sum up what could be a fairly lengthly paragraph, Paladin, personality-wise, is arrogant, over-bearing, calculating, perceptive, distant, smart, prideful, strict, traditional, and commanding. He's unwilling to admit to mistakes, demands total obedience, and he's potentially addicted to sex. In short, king or no, the man's got his own set of troubles.
Strengths >>
[li] very, very, very, very smart
[/li][li] a moderately accomplished fighter (of all kinds, though apparently not up to par with his son's abilities) He particularily excells in archery
[/li][li] Delivering to an audiance, be it speeches, bad news, or a simple 'good night'
[/li][li] handling situations of varying levels of alarm
[/li][li] keeping emotions to self and not acting rashly
[/li][li] tactful and discrete when needed/wanted
Flaws>>
[/li][li] cold and distant from the world; he doesn't connect with the people around him (for the most part)
[/li][li] so closely bound to the laws and rules and codes that he's quite unwilling to bend, even if he knows that it'd be a good thing
[/li][li] with a large hubris (and no, that's not his nose) and being prouder than a peacock, the king is quite unwilling to ackowledge when he's made a mistake (gods, he's the king!)
[/li][li] cack-handed; he finds it tedious to write with his left hand, and somewhat painful to do so with his right hand (despite the numerously ardent attempts by his tutors to cure this 'affliction'). The mindset of his weaponry instructors and later his knight-master weren't much different than that of his tutor, and he never learned to fight with his dominant hand. Unfortunately, not being ambidextrous, Paldin's fighting abilities suffered some.
[/li][li] a bit of a hypocrite (aren't all royalty?)
[/li][li] in the very early stages of nymphomaniacism (is that even a word?) Paladin's wife is, and probably always will be, a frigid bitch that gave him worthless children. Not to mention that she's stopped putting out for him, and they no longer share a bed. So, Paladin's a little bit deprived, and as a powerful man with a powerful body, he's burning something powerful. In fact, he's so deprived that he's begun to think of it daily, and not in passing fancy. He daydreams. And he's also starting to think that it's be a-okay to trounce his marriage vows and start sleeping with the laundry maids, and the cleaning ladies, and the maidservants, the ladies in waiting, the--okay, you get the point. Thing is, he's seriously starting to think that he needs a royal bastard, a Fitz Roi, to help take on the kingdom and keep it in good order. That, and it'd stop him from doing something too nefarious, like pushing an issue with the duck...
Likes>>
[/li][li] his younger brother; it comes and goes
[/li][li] his wife; again, it comes and goes
[/li][li] his father; need I repeat myself?
[/li][li] his children; please note that it's gone a lot more than it's present
[/li][li] a good draught of genuine whiskey (though he doesn't drink very much, it's the taste he likes)
[/li][li] a rousing game of chess
[/li][li] strategies and tactics
[/li][li] women
[/li][li] certain activities with women, though such excursions have become rarer and rarer ever since the royal children were all born
[/li][li] to some extent, Lord Onyx Hawk
[/li][li] for the most part, his nephew Peter
Dislikes>>
[/li][li] crown prince Peregrine (let's not even go there)
[/li][li] the state his father is in
[/li][li] his eldest son's rivalry with his nephew
[/li][li] Gwendolyn's behavior (most unbecoming of a royal princess)
[/li][li] Eirian's behavior (weak)
[/li][li] Pearl's behavior (spiteful wench)
[/li][li] his firstborn's blatant lack of regard to his kingdom's customs and traditions
[/li][li] his immediate male family's penchant for rather short hair, in particular his son and his brother's son
[/li][li] meaningless babble and prattling
[/li][li] hasty and rash decisions, and the people that make them
[/li][li] foolish, foolhardy fools
[/li][li] liars
[/li][li] dishonest people[/li][/ul]

APPEARANCE>> Since times ago, a paladin has been thought of as a knight without a shield, a warrior without armor. Though the King does indeed have his own set of armor and shield (well, several, but that's beside the point), the connotation stands true for Paladin Alexander, the Scoailte paladin. He's big, he's burly, and he's in superb shape; in short, he looks exactly like a warrior, and though he tends to dress up his body and look elegant and sophisticated (and, in some ways, he suceeds; in other ways, not so much) deep down where it really counts, Paladin's the look of a strong fighting man.
As well as being a big man, Paladin inherited was has become known as the Alexander traits, having blonde hair and somewhat-blue eyes. However, unlike many of the Alexanders and even the Hawks, Paladin's hair is more of a ruddy blonde, brownish, with darker highlights that enable his hair to appear dark brown in the lightless night. Also unlike the typical characteristics attributed to his family name, Paladin's eyes are, rather than a sharp, clear, pirecing blue - very murky, and liberally tinged with green. It should also be noted that Paladin's skin is a tad darker than is the norm of the family, but nothing too serious.
Hair >> blonde, longish
Eyes>> blue-green
Height>> just under six feet tall
Weight
Skin Tone>> caucasian, tan
Body Type>> warrior
Distinguishing Marks>> none
Clothing>> Paladin favors breeks, tall boots, tunics, vests, doublets, and over coats, all well made and of good quality, though nothing flimsy or easily torn.

FULL HISTORY>>
The birth was always a celebratory event, but the birth of two princes was even more reason for celebration. They were blonde, blue-eyed and healthy and the King, Philip Alexander, held a feast in their honor. His wife, Titania, the new mother of the two boys, was weak, but was overcome with happiness at the arrival of their two sons. She insisted that she was on the mend and all seemed well that night. The next morning, the queen was found dead, apparently having died in her sleep.
Where great joy had previously reigned, great sorrow, from the queen's death, was observed by all in Saor. The king was stricken with grief, for he had been blessed with the rare opportunity to choose his own bride and he had loved her dearly. Now he was faced with living the rest of his life alone (for he refused, point blank, to remarry) and to raise his sons without a mother. After the queen was buried, he poured all of his energy into raising his sons...and not much into running the kingdom. No one is certain, but it is said that it was at this point in his life that his madness set in and he began to lose his grip on reality.
He ordered that neither of the boys were to be disciplined very harshly, for he considered them to be the last living remains he had of his deceased, but still beloved wife. As a result, both boys grew haughty and were cross with the servants and everyone below them. The eldest, in particular, reminded Philip of his late wife and so he took a special interest in the boy. He saw to it that his favorite and the future king received only the best instruction. Philip, the prince whom had been given his own name, was bitter, but Philip was both oblivious and slowly going out of his mind.
As a young man, a youth of considerable heritage and beauty, Paladin took to wooing young women, no matter what their place in society. Philip, who clearly loved the boy, didn't want him to sucum to the same weakness he had. He didn't want his most cherished son to fall into the same pit he had blindly stepped into: love. He didn't want Paladin's future wife to die, but if she did, he wanted the prince to be strong. And so he arranged the marriage and Paladin and Philip the Second were married on the same day to two twin sisters of the Roderick clan. The brothers were fifteen.
Two years passed. Paladin was never sent directly into battle, but he was allowed to ride his horse to a distance from the fighting and watch. Over this time, King Philip became increasingly madder. He started to lose his memory and made rash decisions. As soon as Paladin turned seventeen, he was crowned King of Saor (and Sceith, even though the Lowlands wasn't under the control of the Highlands any more) and Philip the First did something no other king had ever done before; he stepped down to let his son take over while he was still a relatively young man.
A little while after Paladin had turned eighteen, his firstborn son, Finely, was born. Unlike so many others of his line, Finely was dark-haired, green-eyed and distinctly unlike anyone in the royal family. They changed his name to Dolan, but as the prince's personality started to emerge, they named him Peregrine, for he was like a stranger to the family; unlike anyone they had ever known.
At first, Paladin had tried to love his eldest son, but due to a combination of his own cold nature and Peregrine's rebellious and at the time, immature attitude, the two never really got alone, even before the prince learned to talk. Next, his wife bore him two twin girls; lovely princesses with long golden tresses, their fair faces identical. The king however, was not interested. Girls. They were good for marrying off to create alliances with other kingdoms. Then another prince, Pandion, came along. Unlike his elder brother, the crown prince, Peregrine, he looked like he was supposed to timid and sweet-natured for Paladin to take a real interest in. Finally, his wife bore him one more brat of a daughter for a princess and he gave up, wondering if a bastard son from another woman might tear the kingdom apart or not.
He was most covetuous of of his brother's son, Peter, a boy who had both the looks and the personality befitting of a King. And he was strong, unlike the two scrawny excuses for princes he had so unfortunately sired. Perhaps Peter is the only person he has ever learned to love. His wife is not good for much, his brother is an idiotic git, his father is mad, he never knew his mother and his children are insolent brats he'd rather not think about.
And you thought you had issues.

"Ignore him," Marty called out automatically on the heels of Gabriel's refusal. She was still winded from her fall, and what should have been a strong and hale voice was reduced to a breathy, husky impersonation. At least it wasn't quaking, and she was pleased to note that there were no abnormalties, such as squeaking or catching of sounds. And, as an added bonus, the sheer roughness of voice endowed her sounds with a gruff quality that leaned toward deep.
Marian had broken the fall for Gabriel, and a hard fall it had been. Her entire left side ached, and it pained her to shift around. The aches had started immediately after impact, and it'd almost been too much to unwrap her arm from Gabriel's body and sit up. That she had made her feel better, but not by much. Luckily, she wasn't left-handed.
"How'd you propose to assist us, anyway?" she inquired tactfully, though she felt anything but at the moment. In fact, all she wanted to do right then was rub her sore shoulder and find a cave to crash in. That, however, wasn't an option right then. She had an injured/sick person that she'd volunteered to help even though she had no idea what exactly was wrong with him, and now she was confronted with yet another stranger, this one more strange than the stranger that lay relatively still beside her. Not only did she have to play the role of protector, but she had no idea what this person intended, and thus, Marian had to stand strong.
Even if it hurt.
