As an introduction, please write a passage from a song, quote, poem or another written work as relates to your character and credit the author. Trust me, this really helps. There is no limit to how much or how little you may use, but please don’t stretch the page with all of the lyrics. Make your point and move on. You’ll be writing inside the code again.
NICKNAMES AND ALIASES: Most of us have nicknames, even if they aren’t shortenings of our real names. However, we understand if your character has none. If your character had to change their name or goes by a different name, that’s their alias. Please put a note to differentiate nicknames from aliases.
MEANING OF NAME: Is we already have the names you chose for your character, you can look it up here, but are advised to cross-reference your research. Especially for Scottish surnames, you are strongly advised to look up the story behind it, the family coat of arms, motto and the place where it came from. We would like you to define all three of your character’s and how they got them or how they relate to him or her. If you make up name meanings, we will know.
AGE: This should fit their PB and their station in life, as well as their species.
GENDER:We hope you’re capable of filling in this one. 47.something% of the population is male, 52% is female and the other decimal percentage are hermaphrodites.
SEXUAL ORIENTATION: We accept characters of all sexualities, (heterosexual, bi-sexual, homosexual, etc…) but we would like you to remember the common beliefs of the day when filling this field in. Homosexuality was considered an abomination and anyone caught performing remotely romantic or sexual actions with a member of their own sex was most often burnt at the stake. So, I repeat, if your character is bi or gay, make sure they keep things confidential or have the ability to run and hide quickly.
KINGDOM: You have twelve kingdoms to choose from. Please read the info here.
BIRTHPLACE: Preferably, we would like your character to have been born in one of the twelve kingdoms, but if they are a foreigner, please keep it to Europe, Asia or Africa. Also, if you missed it the first time, please list their birthplace as city, country or kingdom. For example: Inverness, Saor. No fictional towns or countries—do the fricken’ research.
DATE OF BIRTH: Not every character needs to be born on Christmas day or on Halloween night. Yes, before you yell, “hypocrite!” Peregrine was born at midnight on the first of January, but he is one of the oldest-remaining characters on the site. For the rest of them, spread their birthdays out, as we do keep track. Your character will gain age as the IC year passes (which will take as long as our real year) and please provide us with the month, the day and the year in which he or she was born into. Providing the day of the week and time at which they were born is helpful, but not required.
ACCENT: Your character will speak with the accent associated with the place in which they spent the most amount and earliest of their memorable childhood in. Everyone speaks with an accent, even though we may not hear it.
LANGUAGES SPOKEN: English will most probably one of them, but it doesn’t have to be. Scottish Gaelic is most often spoken by the upper classes of Saor, Sceith and Skye in addition to English. Scottish Gaelic is the dominant language of the Outer Hebrides and the Shetland Islands and Irish Gaelic is spoken in Ireland in addition to English. English is spoken in England, but French is also widely spoken in Great Britain among all classes. Welsh and increasingly, English is spoken in Wales and both Irish and Scottish Gaelic is spoken by the banshees of Ingleborough. Greek is the language of the Merfolk. English and Cornish dominate Cornwall, but Latin also thrives there. For the upper classes, Latin may or may not be spoken. If your character is a foreigner, they will obviously be speaking their native tongue. Please take into account that languages that are popular now weren’t necessarily popular then. For example, your character will most likely not speak Japanese unless he or she is from or spent a great deal of time in Japan. There are no “racial” languages (Elvish, Dwarvish, Vampiric, etc…). Please indicate which language is your character’s native tongue.
REGIONAL HERITAGE: Are they from Scotland? Ireland? England? Wales? Cornwall? Are they a foreigner from France, Germany or Spain? What about their parents? Your character could be born in Scotland, but be of British heritage. Tell us about this.
SPECIES: A full list may be found here. Hybrids should be used sparingly and no crazy crosses and half-breeds, please. If you’re unsure about what species you want to apply for, take a human.
SUBSPECIES OR RACE: Once you have picked your character’s species, there may be a subspecies or a race for you to further pick. For example, a human could be Caucasian or Black and a banshee could be a keener, shape-shifter or fallen angel.
MARITAL STATUS: Single, taken, married, separated, divorced, widowed, etc, etc… Please note that you are not allowed to play your character’s love interest or have them as a significant NPC In most cases, your ability as a writer is measured at how well you play a romance. You may have your character’s love interest as an NPC who rarely appears. However, we recommend that you let someone else play your character’s love interest, if you go with the “at a distance” NPC option. But seriously, your experience will be so much richer if you let someone else play the love interest.
SOCIAL CLASS: Your character social class is determined by their occupation, parentage and wealth. The UK and Ireland area of this time period did not have a lot of social mobility, so if your character’s father was a serf, your character will most probably be a serf. Unlike today, the social classes rarely intermarried. Writing “upper class”, “middle class”, “lower class”, etc… is vague and leaves a wide margin for misunderstanding. Therefore, we would appreciate it if you get more specific. “Artisan”, “merchant”, “serf or “peasant” are all good words to use here. However, we will accept “royal”, “noble”, “gentle”, “free” and “serf” here.
OCCUPATION: This is even more specific. Once you’ve selected your character’s social class, you get to select their job. If they’re a merchant, tell us what they sell. If they’re a mercenary, tell us what their area of expertise is.
RELIGION: Christian? Jewish? Muslim? Buddhist? Chances are people living in this area at this time are going to be Christian, and Catholic at that. However, we’ll allow you to do whatever you want, as long as the religion in question was in existence by 1516 A.D. Also, keep in mind the religious views and persecutions surrounding them at the time.
PLAY-BY: Write the name of the person who represents your character here. Yes, they must be a named actor, musician, model or someone else who works in the entertainment business. No MySpace and Facebook kings and queens, random or unnamed people. Politicians and other public officials may not be used. You may not use your friend, family, people you know or yourself. We are more than willing to help you find named play-by. Keep in mind that your PB doesn’t have to look exactly like the image of your character in your head, but they should do a fair job of representing them. If you’re playing a beast character, such as a dragon or a centaur, find an image of one as portrayed in a movie or TV show, such as the dragon in Harry Potter or the Nazgul in Lord of the Tongs. You can also have a graphic artists on the site put together a custom image of a beast character, such as a griffin or a unicorn. No paintings, drawings, cartoons, video/computer game-generated images or anime. If it doesn’t look real, we don’t buy it.
CANON, REQUESTED OR ORIGINAL?: If your character is a canon, you picked him or her from a list and wrote an audition post. If he or she is an original, you created him or her by yourself. If your character is requested, you responded to an advertisement posted by another member. Tell us here.
HISTORY:
This does not need to be a novel, but we would like you to tell us your character’s life story in condensed form. This means that you do not have to go rambling on about every time your character had dinner or went for a walk. However, pleas include the major events or the minor events that had an effect on the character. You are allowed to get as detailed as you please. You most probably will not be able to sum up your character’s entire life thus far in one or two paragraphs, but if you can do that, you are a gifted writer indeed. Again, there is no length requirement, but please make it interesting and realistic.
O N E ;
T W O ; T H R E E ; F O U R ; F I V E
All you have to do is take out “O N E” and replace it with an adjective describing your character’s personality. Repeat this for “T W O”, “T H R E E”, “F O U R”, and “F I V E”.
GENERAL PERSONALITY DESCRIPTION:
Again, there is no length requirement. Just please, make your character interesting, realistic and flawed! And yes, you are back to writing outside the code.
BITS AND PIECES
Here, list strengths, skills, likes, dislikes, fears, secrets, pastimes, favorites and anything else of that nature that comes to mind. You have the option of explaining a strength, skill, like, dislike, fear, secret, etc…, although you are not required to, we may ask you to explain something if clarification is needed. There is no minimum requirement, but there should be significant content here to explain the character. Get creative.
FLAWS
This is possibly the most important part of your application. It will be scrutinized heavily, so please don’t be offended when you get feedback on this. One- or two-word flaws with an explanation of how each flaw weakens the character are best. Specific, contradictive, conditional, occupation and “sometime-y” flaws won’t be given very much weight. Instead of writing “can be shallow or scatterbrained at times”, write, “stupid”, in place of “slightly uncoordinated”, write, “clumsy”. Flaws that have the capacity to change must be balanced out with flaws that will arise. Instead of, “cannot fight with sword”, write, “cannot fight” and be sure to put a potential or “arising” flaw if your character learns to fight. If you write, “too pretty” or “too nice”, please pour cold water over your head and start over. Contrary to popular belief, “stubborn” is a strength, not a flaw.
You must have at least five sound and true flaws. We will not accept you until we are absolutely satisfied. Go on, be heartless and cruel to your character: it’s the sign of a good writer.
If you do not express flaws in your character after your application has been accepted, we will speak to you privately about it.
You may list specific, slightly, contradictive, conditional, occupational and “sometime-y” flaws, (they actually help) but you must have at least <b>five</b> permanent, real, hardcore flaws. Please include examples of how and when these flaws affect your character.
GENERAL APPEARANCE DESCRIPTION
Again, there is no no length requirement for this. But please, go more in-depth than a few sentences. You do not need to enlighten us on how the sunlight glitters on his or her hair, but do write something. “Look at the picture” or “just like [name of play-by]” are not acceptable answers. Please include your character’s hair color/description, eye color, skin tone, height, weight, traits, etc… Tell us what makes them attractive, unattractive or average.
CLOTHING:
The type of clothing they go after. Keep it medieval. Pictures and examples are win, but not necessary.
SOCIAL
A brief description of how your character relates to other people. Are they friendly and friend-seeking, anti-social and solitary or somewhat in between? What about their family? What is their relationship with their kin? Do they already have any friends? Enemies? What about their romantic desires? What do they look for in a partner? What do they try to avoid? How do they think people perceive them? In general, how do people really perceive them? Again, there is no length requirement, but you are encourages to write to the best of your ability.
LINEAGE
FATHER: name, age, occupation
MOTHER: name, age, occupation
BROTHERS: if any, name, age, occupation
SISTERS: if any, name, age, occupation
EXTENDED FAMILY: list the names of anyone important to your character
POTENTIAL PLOTTING
Do you have any plans for this character? Well, you should. So go on, don’t be shy, list them here. You can always come up with more/change your plans later. Also, include why you think this character is interesting, realistic, entertaining, playable and what you think they can add to the site. Why should we accept him or her? C’mon, spit it out. If absolutely no plans come to mind, give us an outline of “A Day In the Life” of your character.
OTHER
Anything we missed? Remember that weapons, animals, houses and powers are applied for separately. You may mention them, but that is no guarantee that you will have them accepted.
ROLE PLAYING SAMPLE:
Role play sample here, please. You are free to copy and paste an RP sample from another character and/or site if you wish, so long as you wrote it. Some people prefer to write a sample post for the character they are applying for to see if they can play them well and will have muse for them. We leave the choice up to you.
NAME OR ALIAS: something to call you—must be the same for all of your characters.
AGE: optional
GENDER: optional, but if you provide it, we can correctly refer to you as “he” or “she”. Otherwise, we’ll just use the gender of your first character.
TIME ZONE: optional, but helpful
METHODS OF CONTACT: PM, e-mail, MSN, etc…No phone numbers please.
LANGUAGE: If English is not your first language, you are dyslexic or there is something else hindering your writing, please let us know and we’ll cut you come slack. Or not, you are entitled to your privacy, if you so wish.
OTHER CHARACTERS: Please list all other characters you play on the site here, including the one you are applying for.
MAGIC WORDS: they’re in the rules and they change from time to time. Yes, they’re in there.
