Yeah. The checks and balances are all well and good in an ideal society but we're hardly ideal. So while they keep an insane dictator from taking over the country, they also keep us from getting anything done. The only power the President has is to pass or veto laws, not much else.

Oh, "The only power the President has is to pass or veto laws, not much else." You said this Aden, yet, you must not know much about how this works. The president has control of the troops, yet, only congress can declare war. Hence the checks and balances system. They have lots of power, its just split in amongst the groups or 'branches' if you prefer. Along these lines, the president does not have all of the power to pass or veto laws as even if he passes a law, someone else can veto it, and i am pretty sure that congress(or perhaps it is the legislature) can un-veto (for lack of better terms) a presidential-veto.
