"Yes, in fact I do." Oliver said, "This was the first site I made which was going to be Warrior Falls, but it never really had any brillance, so I've been testing things on it ever since it died." He said, presenting the URL (( sporthorses.proboards59.com/index.cgi))

"ok, that's almost perfect. Now you just need a topic for the table. Do you want it to be like you were making it for the site, or just something random?" Mizukey looked through the page a bit, clicking the button to make an account so that she could look at his coding work and such to check for correctness of code.

"Nah, let's make it random," Oliver said, "Completely and utterly random." He said with relish, his speech whistling through his cumbersome braces. "So, how would I make it so that I have a table with a welcome message, a staff panel and a links panel on either side and then two identical panels for member of the month and horse of the month?" He asked.

Hol was late for class, again. She was wearing a black spaghetti strap singlet and skinny jeans with her strawberry blonde hair in it's latest style of a one sided bun with a butterfly hairpin, a black ribbon around her neck and thongs. As Hol got to the class she saw that a girl and boy were deep in discussion so she knocked quietly and murmured "sorry I'm late Ms" before walking to a seat and placing her usual khaki one shoulder bag beside her.

"Its ok... Hol, was it?" Mizukey nodded in the new students direction. "We have just started covering tables in HTML. Their are some notes on the board (aka, in the past 2 pages) about what we've done so far, so you can just read over those and ask any questions you have. You will need a place to experiment also... maybe Pippin will be willing to let you borrow a stray board on his site if you ask nicely. You just need a spot where I can examine your work..."
She cleared her throught and turned back to the board. "So, before we start, we need a plan of what your table is going to look like. I was thinking that we would use a format similar to the one on the main Silmarial table... does that work with the both of you?"
((so, yes, you two can talk it over but I think it would be fairly easy for thorn to join pippin's site that he is using and pip can give him admin powers to edit headers and footers and thorn can pick a random board to do his work in... I don't care.))

Hol quickely read what was on the board. "So these tags are words or abbrieviations inbetween those arrow signs, right?" as she asked this she starts twirling a small braid of extra hair around her fingure.
((ok. i'll talk to him about it when i see him next))

Oliver quickly went to Sport Horse.Com, clicked on the Admin button and set about making his table, attempting to make it so that only one word would be in his table: "hello". It didn't work very well.
"Ok, question." He said cheerfully, raising his right hand. "I just typed in the following on the Main Footer:
<table><center>
<size=4><b>Hello!</b></center]
</table>
It didn't like that apparently." He continued, "It just showed 'hello' there, but no table. Did I do something wrong?" He asked.

"Yes, when you create a table, you must first specify rows and colums for the data to be entered in. I was just getting to that. Hello, new student.. please take a seat and read over the notes on the board. Now, after you all have a test place, we are going to try something."
Mizukey paused for a moment, thinking about how she should phrase things. "Ok, if you don't have somewhere were you can test the codes, I will teach you another way, but it will be more complicated.... so maybe Pippin will let you all have admin powers on SportHorse and you can work there.... please try to figure something out as quickly as possible... ((just PM each other or something and figure something out.. you need a place to test this stuff..)
"Now, as I said before, every table has rows and columns that make it up. These must be surrounded by table tags, but they only control the formatting of the table, which we will get to later."
"Besides the table tag, the two most important tags to remember when creating tables are the <td> and <tr> tags. They stand for table row and table data, though the last creates a column. All your data must be inclosed in these tags to appear in table format. When you build a table, you always build it across, one row at a time. If your row contains three columns, which is a pretty common number for most sites, you would build a table with one row that contained the three columns... this would be an example of that. "
Mizukey stopped talking for a second and typed something into her computer. Onto the screen popped the following code.
<table> <tr> <td><p>Hello, this is the first column</p></td> <td><p>Hello, this is the second column</p></td> <td><p>Hello, this is the third column</p></td> </tr> </table>
"The <p> tag that you see stands for paragraph. All text must have this tag, or one of the others similar to it that we will talk about later, around it. As for the table tags that we are talking about, you can see that I first opened the table, then a row, then I entered 3 rows by entering the <td> tag three times, then closed both the row and the table. Now, who have I lost and what questions do you have for me? I would like you all to try writing your own code about like this and testing it somewhere, but don't just copy paste mine...."

"Thanks Mizu." Oliver said gratefully, re-opening Sport Horse.Com to the main footers page as he began to write his code which was based off of, but not copied, from the teacher's. "Yes, as Mizu suggested, you may all have admin powers to perform experiments on the board, just register and I'll promote you immediately. No questions asked." He said. "Hey, it worked!" He exaulted. "Well, sort of."

"yes, actually, it did work, even though it may not look like it. Html default is for there to be no borders around your tables, as it has done with yours." Mizukey paused, deciding to use this as a teaching oppurtunity. She quickly copied Pip's code to a document where she could post it up on the screen and did so. <table> <center> <tr> <td><p>Greetings, I am Pip</p></td> <td>Salutations, I am a derranged mouse</p></td> <td><p>Hi, this is a test, this is nothing but a test. If it were real it would sound like this: AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!</p></td> </tr> </center> </table> "There are a few things that arn't quite right though. First off, the center tags. I know that I haven't talked about them yet, but you seemed to have figured out what they are supposed to do. That's fine, but you would need to put them before and after the table tags, rather than after, if you are trying to center the entire table. Also, it seems that you need not put the paragraph tags there if you don't want to, that was my mistake. It won't do anything different really, but you can choose. So, if you were to revise the code, it would just look like this." <table> <tr> <td>Greetings, I am Pip</td> <td>Salutations, I am a derranged mouse</td> <td>Hi, this is a test, this is nothing but a test. If it were real it would sound like this: AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!</td> </tr> </table> "Which makes the following table, minus the lines: Greetings, I am Pip | Salutations, I am a derranged mouse | Hi, this is a test, this is nothing but a test. If it were real it would sound like this:
AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! |
"Ok, since I know that you are going to want the lines of your table visable for many of the next few things we will be doing, that's what I will show you how to do next." "Making the lines visable requires that you add an extra few words to the table tag. I think they are called paramators, but I'm not sure about that. You add these words to already existing tags because they are a part of that tag. For example, if we were talking about the font tag, which I will get to later, parameters for size and color would go in the font tag because they are elements of that tag. The parameter for creating lines on your table is border="# of pixels wide you want the border to be". So, if you wanted your table to have lines 3 pixels wide, yoor table tag would look like this: <table border="3"> and the closing tag would be the same as it was before." </table> Ok, any questions before we move on? Let me know if I am confusing you, please."

Oliver obediantly clicked on the Headers and Footers and performed the task which was linked to Mizu's instruction. Making a few minor adjustments, he clicked on "Save changes" and was delighted with the results.
"It worked!" He exalted delightedly. "How do you do text color and size?" He asked eagerly, clicking on "Admin" again.

Mizukey was glad that her students were understanding her instruction and were eager to learn. "Well, before we do that, why don't we give the background a color so that we can see the words easier? To do that, we just need to add another parameter to the table tag." <table bgcolor="color or hex code here" border="3"> "In place of the words i inserted between the quotations, you need simply to put a pound sign (#) followed by the hex color number. This is my favorite site which to look up these numbers on www.december.com/html/spec/color.html. Let me know how you do"
